HOW VISITING SUPPORTS THE CATHEDRAL

We are passionate about conserving and preserving the history of Saint Mary’s Cathedral and it brings us great pleasure to share the building and all that it stands for, with you. It’s important to know that we do not receive any Government or EU funding toward the day-to-day running and maintenance of this historic building – making your visit to us even more precious and important. Your support, whether through your admission fees or donations, makes a real difference and allows us to continue to fund the many and varied aspects of the Cathedral’s life.

Baptisms of both infants and adults normally take place as part of regular worship on a Sunday morning. The Church of Ireland recognises baptism by water in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit by other Christian traditions. The Church will not rebaptise a person who has previously been baptised.  Baptism in the Church of Ireland is recognised as equivalent to baptisms in other Christian traditions.

For the baptism of children, we encourage the parents to act as their sponsors, while parents can also choose godparents who will share the responsibility of bringing up a child in the Christian faith.

All sponsors and godparents must be baptised as children and at least two must be members of the Church of Ireland or a denomination in communion with the Church of Ireland.

When arranging a funeral there are two points of contact. Firstly, the clergyperson who will conduct the service, and the funeral director.

The clergyperson is always the first contact point, and you will need to check that they are available for a service before you make arrangements with the funeral director. The clergyperson will advise on the content of the service using resources from the Book of Common Prayer. A funeral service may also be conducted as a communion service.

Groups are very welcome at the Cathedral and group rates are available. Guided tours are also available on request.
